150423_GRJ7549The Distinguished Women’s Award Celebration, which began in 1980, is Girl Scouts of Central Maryland’s only annual fundraiser. The evening honors five women in our community who lead amazing lives guided by the values of Girl Scouting and showcases an exciting mentoring opportunity for five selected high school Girl Scouts.

In addition to honoring five successful women in central Maryland, the Distinguished Women program provides five Girl Scout Seniors or Ambassadors an opportunity to spend a day in the life with our Honorees discovering new fields, learning corporate responsibility and gaining insight as they make strides in their own career paths. Guests are given a brief glimpse of the Shadow Girl and Honoree’s rewarding experiences at the Distinguished Women’s Award Celebration during the award presentation. Proceeds from this event are designated for quality mentoring experiences and programming in career exploration opportunities for girls in our community, particularly the 9,000 at-risk girls served by our Council.

SM Pic 9.2011

She spent her formative years moving all over India with her family, since her father was in the Armed Forces. This gave her an appreciation and understanding of the subtle differences of the varied cultures within India. She learned to adapt quickly and make friends easily. She moved to Baltimore, working for well-known firms before opening The Law Office of Sheela Murthy in May 1994. Today, Ms. Murthy makes an excellent ideal for those wishing to realize the great American dream. While cherishing her roots, which taught her to make the most rewarding use of each and every blessed opportunity, she also feels deeply attached to her adopted country, which respects perseverance over inheritance and limits an individual only by her dreams. In an act of giving back, Sheela Murthy and her husband, Vasant Nayak, dedicate themselves to community service efforts in the United States and in India through the MurthyNAYAK Foundation.

Shadow Girls spend a day with an honoree for an up-close look at how she manages her time, staff and family/community responsibilities. It’s a unique one-on-one, hands-on experience from which you can learn from women who are some of the best of their chosen professions.

For more information about the DW Shadow program, contact Katrina Straker at kstraker@gscm.org.
